It's caused primarily by consuming food or water contaminated with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) — bacteria that inflame the digestive tract. Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC)
A strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli that produces toxins causing intestinal fluid secretion and diarrhea. It is the most common bacterial cause of traveler's diarrhea worldwide.
